John's cross), has no clear association with death as far as I know. The traditional ornamental valknute (also known as "sankthanskors", St. If this is true, the connection to Odin and sacrifice is severely shaky, seeing that Hrungnir was an adversary of Thor. What was it originally called? Nobody is alive to tell us, but the Icelandic chronicler Snorri Sturlusson mentions in Skáldskaparmál, that the giant Hrungnir had a "famous heart": It was jagged, with three edges or protrusions, and Snorri mentions that it looks like a carved symbol ( ristubragð) called hrungnishjarta derived from the myth. I can only speculate why such an arbitrary term was picked in the first place, but it has spawned decades of circular and anachronistic reasoning, based on the etymology of the symbol's recently applied name. It's also identical to the command key on Apple keyboards. First and foremost, many Norwegians know it already as a square, looped knot (⌘ ) used to designate points of interest on maps and road signs. However, the name was taken from Norwegian valknute, which specifically refers to an entirely different range of symbols and ornaments that appears in textile- and woodworking. This this not to say that the valknut isn't a real term. The term was arbitrarily applied to the symbol in modern scholarship, but the historical precedence is non-existent. However, the elephant in the room is that the word * valknútr does not exist in the Norse language at all. While iconography is sometimes cited, the interpretation is mainly based on the etymology, which assumes that it comes from an Old Norse term meaning "knot of the slain". My arguments lean heavily on his groundwork.Īs mentioned, I assert that there is no sound evidence to support claims that the valknut was primarily a symbol of fate, sacrifice, death and binding. His “ Valknútr”: das Dreiecksymbol der Wikingerzeit, is a solid piece of work that would have been earth-shaking, had it only been written in English instead of German. * Valknútr and Valknute, same but differentĬredit goes out to the research of Tom Hellers who wrote an entire book on this. I will still make the case that the valknut is a great example of spiritual idiosyncrasy drawn from faulty reasoning, which consequently brings more darkness than light to our understanding of pre-Christian religion. Rather, I hope I am adding something to public discourse that should have been said a long time ago. Obviously, I cannot argue with personal ideas and connotations, and I didn't write this article to burst any bubbles. Actually it's quite the opposite! I believe source criticism matters: It is not the enemy of fanciful speculation. I don't believe academic nuance has damaged my relationship with the symbol. If anything, the connotations have developed and matured with me. Regardless of source-critical status, it worked as the personal reminder I intended it to be. While I no longer accept this as the be all and end all interpretation of the symbol, it still retains a personal significance to me. By permanently fixing it to my skin, it showed my appreciation for the things in life, both good and bad, that are beyond our personal agency and control. My teenage self would say the valknut was an odinic symbol of sacrifice and fate. In retrospect, I suppose my perception was pretty standard. This younger, less discriminating version of myself went down to my local tattoo parlor, and asked for a dotwork valknut on my forearm, which I got. You may find some solace from my iconoclastic rampage in the fact that I am one of you.Īt the age of 18 I found myself in the blissful and rare situation of having few financial commitments, yet an abundance of spare cash. This demographic makes for a significant chunk of my reader base, and if you are one of these people, then please bear with me. The uncountable masses who wear it as a pin on their jacket. Who sold t-shirts, and those who bought them. This may be a shocking and provocative statement to make in the face of the thousands of people who have the so-called valknut symbol tattooed, even branded, or carved into their skin. More importantly: No evidence connects the name to the symbol pictured above. The valknut, a staple not only of the study of Norse religion, but of modern heathenry and neopaganism as well, is actually an entirely spurious term: There is no evidence for a “knot of the slain” in any Norse source whatsoever. I'll follow up with a review on their entrees at a later date.Ĭat and I usually visit Chef Chen for our weekend brunch. Given the sheer size of Chef Chen's menu, this review will focus on Chef Chen's Northern-style dim sum. It's a fight that Chef Chen is more than capable of holding its own in, with a selection of superb Northern Dim Sum dishes and a stunning number of entrees. South battle with reigning champion China Garden. There are some who contend that Chef Chen is the best Chinese restaurant in Irvine, placing it squarely in a head-to-head, North vs. Its collection of authentic dishes rarely found in this part of Southern California have generated favorable buzz amongst the local Chinese community. Serving a blend of Shanghai and Taiwanese cuisine dishes, Chef Chen has been repeatedly recommended to me by my readers. Cat and I eventually accepted New Shanghai's departure and turned to its successor, Chef Chen, with open arms. Yet, all good things must come to an end. It's hard to find a replacement for a restaurant you frequented for over nine years. For a while, we flitted from eatery to eatery, searching for something to fill the hole in our weekend routine. When our beloved New Shanghai closed, Cat and I found ourselves adrift, castaways without the safe harbor of our usual Saturday morning brunch spot. (Chef Chen took over New Shanghai's home for over a decade.) Given the high failure rate of restaurant ventures, it's an ache all too familiar to foodies. A place that used to bring you pleasure is gone, taking with it all the small memories housed within. There's emptiness in your soul from the removal of something familiar and comforting. It's always difficult when a favorite restaurant closes. (Pictures for this review taken with my Canon PowerShot SD800is.) Which user account do you want to change the password?. The techniques used here can also be adapted for replacing lattice on a deck, fence, gate, privacy screen, or trellis. The swing-up frames also make it easy to crawl underneath the porch to repair the framing if needed. Rather than permanently attach the frames, we hung them on hinges so the homeowners could use the space below the porch for storage. We also opted for an unconventional installation method. Here we built a durable new skirt using pressure-treated lumber and TuffBilt plastic lattice. (The porch we worked on had this type of skirt.) While a frameless skirt is easy to install, it’s also susceptible to warping and damage because the lattice has very little support. Occasionally, a porch skirting doesn’t have a framework and simply consists of a lattice screen attached directly to cleats nailed to the understructure framing. In regions that receive a lot of precipitation, wood rot can begin to appear in less than two years. In time, the parts closest to the ground begin to rot and the decay spreads to the lattice. Leave half of the plate to hang from the bottom to secure it to the existing fence post. With 2-inch screws, secure a metal tie plate to the bottom of the extension fence post. Add extension posts to the existing fence posts with a metal tie plate. In older homes, it’s often built of untreated pine or fir, neither of which is very resistant to decay and bugs. Most lattices come in 4-by-2 feet or 8-by-2 feet panels that can be cut with a table or hand saw. This enclosure conceals the framing while it also allows air to circulate under the porch floor, which keeps the framing dry and free of rot.Ī skirt typically consists of a lattice panel set into a wood frame. Here you’ll learn how to handle one of the most common of all porch repairs: building a new lattice skirt. If your porch isn’t well maintained, the whole house looks shabby. Note: This is an update of a post originally published on Dec. Overall, about one-in-five Americans (19%) now say none of these things actually happened. Belief in these events has declined not only among people with no religious affiliation, but among Christians as well. adults (57%) believe that all four of these things actually happened, down from 65% three years ago. Similarly, the shares who say they believe that wise men, guided by a star, brought Jesus gifts - and that an angel appeared to shepherds to announce the birth of Jesus - also have declined. Most Americans believe that elements of the biblical Christmas story reflect actual historical events, although the percentage expressing this view has dropped noticeably in recent years. Two-thirds (66%) say Jesus was born to a virgin, compared with 73% who said this in 2014 75% believe he was laid in a manger, down from 81%. In the 1980s, the Supreme Court handed down two landmark rulings that allow for displays of Christmas crèches, Hanukkah menorah and other religious holiday symbols on public property so long as they do not actively endorse or promote a particular religion or religion in general. In practice, religious symbols that are a part of larger secular holiday display (containing, say, Christmas trees, Santa Claus and reindeer) have had a much better chance of surviving a court challenge than those displays that are solely or more overtly religious. Roughly three-in-ten (29%) say these displays should be allowed only if they are accompanied by other religious symbols like Hanukkah candles, a share that has held relatively steady in recent years.Īmericans have long argued about whether nativity scenes and other religious holiday displays on public property violate the Establishment Clause of the U.S. At the same time, a declining share say Christian symbols should be allowed on government property even if they are unaccompanied by symbols from other religions (37% today, down from 44% in 2014). A growing share says religious displays should not be allowed on government property under any circumstances (26%, up from 20% three years ago). We asked Americans if Christian symbols such as nativity scenes should be allowed on government property, and, if so, whether they should be allowed by themselves or only if accompanied by symbols from other faiths. Holiday displays on government property – which prompt annual scrutiny – are another sometimes controversial aspect of Christmas. Republicans are much more likely than Democrats to say they prefer “merry Christmas.” About a third (32%) choose “merry Christmas” – down considerably from the 42% who said this five years ago. About half of Americans (52%) now say it doesn’t matter how stores greet their customers over the holidays, up from 46% in 2012. When they go to the store, which greeting do Americans prefer: “merry Christmas” or “happy holidays”? For some, this can be a sensitive question, but an increasing number of Americans do not seem to have strong feelings either way. adults (56%) also say religious aspects of Christmas are emphasized less in American society today than in the past, though relatively few are bothered by this trend. Today, 46% of Americans say they celebrate Christmas as primarily a religious (rather than cultural) holiday, down from 51% who said this in 2013, with Millennials less likely than other adults to say they celebrate Christmas in a religious way. While these figures have generally held steady in recent years, the role of religion in Christmas celebrations appears to be declining. Nine-in-ten Americans (90%) - and 95% of Christians - say they celebrate Christmas, according to a new Pew Research Center survey. Just in time for the holidays, here are five facts about Christmas in America and how people celebrate it: Wherever Americans stand on holiday-time debates on issues ranging from what’s depicted on Starbucks cups to public displays of religious symbols, it’s hard to disagree that Christmas is still a big part of many people’s lives. Blair Lent’s illustrations are simplistic since there are only yellow, blue, white, black, grey and green colors on each page, but the illustrations still make the story entertaining to read, especially as they capture the true essence of Ancient China and it was also interesting to see a big contrast in clothing between Tikki tikki tembo and Chang as Tikki tikki tembo is dressed in a blue royal looking outfit while Chang is always dressed in a yellow country styled outfit, which indicates to the audience about the importance of their names.ġ001 Books (1) 1001 Children's (63) 1900s (1) 1930s (8) 1940s (7) 1950s (13) 1960s (25) 1970s (49) 1980s (87) 1990s (124) 1st person pov (34) 2000s (167) 2000s manga (28) 2010s (215) 2010s manga (3) 2012 news (3) 2013 News (9) 2014 news (38) 2015 news (119) 2016 news (312) 2017 news (438) 2018 news (294) 2019 news (152) 2020 news (67) 2020s (6) 2021 News (63) 2022 News (57) 2023 News (97) 3 star reads (2) 3.5 star reads (8) 3.7 star reads (1) 4 star reads (91) 4.5 star products (1) 4.5 star reads (42) 4.75 star reads (1) 5 star reads (543) 5.5 star reads (26) 6 star reads (25) A Winter's Respite Readathon (4) A.C. I really loved the way that Arlene Mosel repeats Tikki tikki tembo’s long name (Tikki tikki tembo – no sa rembo - chari bari ruchi – pip peri pembo) over and over again in the book since it is a huge tongue twister to say fast! I also loved the close relationship between Tikki tikki tembo and his brother Chang as they loved to play with each other all the time and they are always willing to help each other out during their time of need. Arlene Mosel has done an excellent job at retelling this ancient Chinese folktale as the story is cute and somewhat intense at the same time. I have always found this book extremely interesting to read, especially about the part where the first sons are given long and extravagant names, while the second sons are always given short names in Ancient China. |
